What it is.

These are the emails that recover money without anyone writing a campaign. Failed payment notifications, unpaid recurring invoice reminders, trial ending reminders, renewal reminders, payment confirmations, and expiring card notifications, each toggled in the Dashboard.

The trial reminder is the one most teams miss. Stripe can send a reminder 7 days before a free trial ends, which changes a surprise charge into an expected one and cuts the disputes that follow.

Each email can link to a Stripe-hosted page where the customer updates their card, so recovery does not depend on a support conversation. Email logs for the last 60 days sit in the Customers page.

What you get.

  • Six billing emails you enable without writing any of them.
  • A trial ending reminder that can go out 7 days ahead.
  • Expiring card notifications, which prevent the failure instead of chasing it.
  • Links to a Stripe-hosted page where the customer updates payment details.
  • Email logs for the last 60 days on the Customers page.
HOW TO USE IT

How to set it up.

1

Open the Dashboard billing settings and read which of the six emails are already on, since some are on by default.

2

Turn on expiring card notifications first, because preventing a decline beats recovering one.

3

Enable the trial ending reminder and set it to 7 days before the trial ends.

4

Switch on failed payment notifications and confirm they link to the hosted update page.

5

Test the configuration with a test customer, so you see what your customer sees.

6

Check email logs after a week to confirm they are sending at all.

Use cases

Enable the recovery emails

Switch the six on once and let them handle failed payments.

Warn before a trial ends

Send the reminder ahead of the charge instead of after it fails.

Stop writing billing copy

Use the provided emails instead of drafting six templates.

Trials that end in disputes

Strengths
  • Six emails you configure in the Dashboard, so nothing needs an engineer.
  • Expiring card notifications prevent failures instead of chasing them afterwards.
  • Every email can link to a hosted page, so the customer can act without contacting you.
Limitations
  • Stripe's emails carry limited branding, so they will not match your other lifecycle mail.
  • The hosted payment link expires, including 30 days after a trial ending email.
  • Email logs only go back 60 days, so audit sooner than that.
  • These emails go out alongside anything your own tool sends, so check you are not doubling up.
Skip this if
  • Skip it if your billing emails are already configured and sending.
