Inbox Collective

What it is.

Dan Oshinsky was Director of Newsletters at both The New Yorker and BuzzFeed. He previously created Not a Newsletter, a monthly briefing on sending better email. The Inbox Collective newsletter now goes out twice a month.

Pieces run long and come out of client work. A January 2026 edition collected what changed in email over the previous year. A June 2026 piece argues that AI inbox features will make newsletters earn their place.

The archive is open on the site and sorted by tag. A free course called The 5-Week Newsletter Growth Blueprint comes alongside the letter.

What you get.

  • Two emails a month, each pointing to a long write-up on newsletter strategy
  • Growth tactics drawn from consulting work with newsrooms and independent publishers
  • Coverage of deliverability, inbox placement, and what AI features do to open behavior
  • Revenue pieces on ads, memberships, and donations, including common selling mistakes
  • An open archive of past articles, tagged by topic
  • A free five-week email course on newsletter growth

Questions about Lifecycle & Email

What moves newsletter open rates now that Apple masks opens?
How should a B2B team think about a newsletter versus a nurture sequence?
Strengths
  • Dan Oshinsky held the newsletter job at The New Yorker and BuzzFeed before consulting.
  • Pieces run long and name the publishers and campaigns they discuss
  • Covers deliverability and inbox placement alongside growth and revenue.
  • Free, with the whole archive open on the web.
Limitations
  • Publisher-first. Written for newsrooms and independent operators, less for B2B SaaS lifecycle.
  • Posts are long. Budget 15 to 20 minutes per issue.
  • Not a Newsletter, the monthly briefing, has been shut down, so some archive links are historical.
  • Twice a month means it reads as analysis, so it won't keep you current on news
Skip this if
  • Skip it if you run no newsletter of your own.
Ideal for
  • Lifecycle marketers
  • Newsletter operators
  • Content leads
  • Audience growth managers
  • Stage: Startup • Scaleup • Enterprise
