What it is.

We ran 1,000 B2B SaaS keywords on US Google, scraped 11,002 pages for 50-plus attributes, and traced 5,227 citations back to the passage each one came from.

Only 37% of the sources cited were ranking in the organic top 10, so an AI Overview slot and a top-10 slot turn out to be two different jobs.

Position still helps. Pages at position 1 get cited 55% of the time against 34% at position 9, and recency moves the number further than domain strength does.

Strengths
  • Every finding ties back to a passage, so you can see where in a page a citation came from instead of guessing.
  • Page-type numbers are specific enough to plan a brief around: comparison pages at 56.2% and definition pages at 55.3%.
  • It says which signals did nothing, which saves a quarter of work on the wrong one.
Limitations
  • This is our own study, and TripleDart sells the work it describes.
  • The findings are associations. Nothing here proves what causes a citation.
  • One capture of US English results, and 11% of the pages never fetched.
Skip this if
  • Skip it if you already publish comparison and definition pages and hold citations on the queries you sell against.
Ideal for
  • SEO and AEO leads
