build-lead-scoring

What it is.

It builds two separate scores in HubSpot's current lead scoring tool: a Fit score on company match and persona, and an Engagement score on behavior with points that decay over time.

Sales can then sort by fit while marketing triggers on engagement, which one number cannot serve. It also flags the retired score property, which stopped updating on 31 August 2025 and is still wired into plenty of live workflows.

What you get.

  • A Fit score covering company match and persona
  • An Engagement score with automatic point decay over time
  • A layered structure from total score limit through group limits to rules
  • Sales able to sort by fit and marketing able to trigger on engagement
  • A check on whether anything still references the retired score property
HOW TO USE IT

How to set it up.

1

Add the marketplace with /plugin marketplace add tomgranot/hubspot-admin-skills, then /plugin install hubspot-admin@hubspot-admin-skills.

2

Confirm you have Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise and Super Admin permissions. Both are prerequisites.

3

Run the create-icp-tiers skill first. The Fit score depends on an ICP Tier property that has to exist and be processed.

4

Build in Marketing then Lead Scoring, the current tool. Anything keyed to the old HubSpot Score property is reading a dead number.

5

Set the Fit score on firmographics and persona only. Mixing behavior into it is what makes a single score useless.

6

Set engagement decay so old activity fades. A lead scored on activity from six months ago is a false positive by design.

HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise is a paid prerequisite. Checked against the repo in July 2026.

Use cases

Scoring a bare portal

The HubSpot portal has no scoring and every lead looks the same. Run the ICP tiers skill first, then this one builds a Fit score on firmographics and persona plus an Engagement score with point decay, all in the current tool.

Leaving the retired property

Workflows are still keyed to the old HubSpot score, which was retired and stopped updating. It checks what still references the dead property so you can rewire before more leads route blind.

Ending the shared-score fight

Sales wants to sort by fit while marketing wants to trigger on engagement, and one number serves neither. Two separate scores give each team the read it needs from the same portal.

Cooling stale activity

A lead who downloaded an ebook months ago still shows as hot. Set the engagement decay and old points fade automatically, so the score reflects behavior that's current.

Best for

A HubSpot portal with no scoring

Without it every lead looks equally unimportant, and sales has no ranked call list.

Workflows still keyed to the old score

The legacy property was retired in August 2025 and stopped updating, so any dependent workflow has been running blind.

Marketing and sales wanting different things

Two scores is the answer. Sales sorts on fit, marketing triggers on engagement.

Questions about build-lead-scoring

Why two scores?
What happened to the old HubSpot Score?
What do I need before running it?
Does engagement decay automatically?

Questions about RevOps & Data

Why separate fit from behavior?
When is lead scoring worth building?
Strengths
  • Two scores in place of one, which is the design that makes scoring usable by both teams.
  • Engagement decay is built in, so activity ages out automatically.
  • Names the retired property and the date it stopped updating.
  • Depends explicitly on the ICP tier skill, so the prerequisite is stated instead of assumed.
Limitations
  • It needs Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise, so the free and Starter tiers are out.
  • Super Admin permissions are required, which in most companies means an approval.
  • It configures HubSpot, so it is only useful if HubSpot is your CRM.
  • The ICP tier skill has to run first, and that is a project of its own.
Skip this if
  • Skip it if your scoring already separates fit from intent.
